The right niche

What is a niche to start with?

Why is it so important?

The Oxford dictionary describes a person’s niche as a comfortable or suitable position in life or employment.

As a new blogger, it’s important to see your blog as an online business. You are the one in charge of its success. That’s why you need to be comfortable with your blog.

  • Do I know anything about this topic?
  • Are there people who’ll be interested in my blog?
  • Will I publish content on the blog comfortably for the months or years to come?

The last thing you need is adding another chore to your life.

Instead, your new blog should strive to give you peace of mind, satisfaction and a little bit of joy.

So, where do you start?

Carry Passion with You Everywhere.

Be passionate about your online business. To give a few examples, would you like your blog to:

  • Showcase the fashion trends sweeping across the country?
  • Show Kenyans how to make money from dairy farming?
  • Teach investors how to trade at the stock market?
  • Be a platform where you can sell your courses in real-estate investment?
  • Have an audience of new moms who look up to you for parental advice?
  • Be something that I haven’t mentioned here, but can help a lot of people within your niche?
  • The internet has opened doors to anyone interested in starting a business. Specifically, an online business.

So if you are going to start an online business, let passion be on your side. You’ll be happy. Your readers will be happy. And I’ll be happy too if this post made you find your niche.

    Ask yourself:

  • What task/side hustle gives you the greatest sense of satisfaction?
  • What comes naturally to you?
  • What do your friends or family ask you to do because they know you’ll accomplish it effortlessly?

Does my niche have a huge following on the web?

If your niche has a huge following, good for you. If it doesn’t, don’t despair. Think what impact your content will have on your ideal readers:

  • Will it improve their life?
  • Will it help them make more money?
  • Will it increase their interpersonal skills, thereby boosting their self-esteems?
  • Will that content change their financial habits?
  • Etc.
  • Suddenly, having a huge following isn’t what’s important. What’s more important is what your blog’s content will do to improve the life of another person.

So, how do I find my ideal readers?

    • Are they on Facebook?
    • Are they on other blogs in your niche?
    • Do they attend expos, conferences, seminars, etc?

Ask yourself more questions until you find out where they reside. Remember, think of your blog as an online business. And any business needs a steady stream of clients for it to succeed, right?

Finding out the right niche for your blog is a soul-searching exercise. For some, finding their niche will be automatic. For others, it’ll be a gruelling task.

But it’s a job that needs to be done to ensure the success of your blog/online business.
